Thermodynamic Steam Traps

Thermodynamic steam traps have a unique operating principle which relies on the dynamics of water and flash steam. They are simple, robust and reliable and can operate up to very high temperatures and pressures.

We would like to share with you an insight into our steam traps and what we have to offer from the TLV steam trap range.

How our steam traps work

1.

The bimetal air vent ring is
contracted, lifting the disc of the
valve seat and allowing rapid
discharge of air and cold
condensate.

2.

Diagram 1

As temperature rises in the trap, the
bimetal expands and releases the
disc. The disc is then forced
downwards by the low-pressure area
created by the rapid flow of flashing
condensate/steam below the disc,
and the simultaneous high pressure
in the pressure chamber above it. An
air jacket insulates the cap's
pressure chamber from the radiant
heat loss that could cause no-load
actuation.

3.

Eventually, as condensate enters the
trap and the steam pressure in the
pressure chamber lowers, the inlet
pressure pushes the disc up and
enables the discharge of
condensate.
Entering flashing condensate/steam
then closes the trap, as in step 2.

Advantages of the
Thermodynamic Steam Trap

  • Thermodynamic traps can
    operate across their entire
    working range without any
    adjustment or change of
    internals.
  • They are compact, simple,
    lightweight and have a large
    condensate capacity for their
    size.
  • Thermodynamic traps can be
    used on high pressure and
    superheated steam and are not
    affected by waterhammer or
    vibration. The all stainless steel
    construction offers a high
    degree of resistance to
    corrosive condensate.
  • As the disc is the only moving
    part, maintenance can easily
    be carried out without removing
    the trap from the line.
  • The audible 'click' which occurs
as the trap opens and closes
    makes trap testing very straight
    forward.
